A map of our "first draft proposed" boxes is attached. We have boxes at several latitudes in order to map out dependence of mixing on latitude. The boxes are 4 degree by 4 degree, except for one box which is 8 degree by 8 degree. The latter will be used to compute horizontal wavenumber/frequency spectra for SWOT purposes (i.e. to look at contributions of high- vs low-frequencies to the wavenumber spectrum of SSH). We will start with the box centered on lats 18-22N, lons 200-204E, and after we get a sense of the resources needed to do the runs, we may adjust the locations and numbers of boxes as needed. We should also add one more box centered on the California Current SWOT CrossOver point. There are 7 McLane profiler moorings in the North Pacific that we wish to compare to. So some of the boxes are situated so that we can compare to the McLane data. We will aim to do the runs over the time period March 16-June 16, with the idea that the first month will represent spinup and the latter two can be compared to the IWAP moorings (the northernmost 6 moorings). The IWAP moorings span April 25-June 16 2006. We can't do the model runs in 2006 but can at least match the time of year. The southernmost mooring, from the HOME experiment, is included in the lats 18-22N, lons 200-204E box. That mooring runs from 14 August to 7 October 2002. If resources permit, we may want to run that box longer so that we get to the same period as the mooring. If we can't do that, we will at least be computing latitudinally dependent mixing over the same time periods in all the boxes.
